Your KP surgeon will schedule your surgery at San Francisco Surgery Center. Upon scheduling your surgery, San Francisco Surgery Center will contact you by phone to confirm your surgery procedure, date of surgery, and KP insurance benefits.
Once your surgery has been scheduled, your surgeon’s office will assist you in making an appointment at the KP Perioperative Medicine Clinic (POM), usually about a week before your surgery or procedure. Most appointments are PHONE appointments, but if you have complex medical problems or are having major surgery, you may be scheduled for a formal office visit in the POM.
At your POM appointment, you will review your medical, surgical, and social history and current medications with a Nurse Practitioner who will update your medical record. Any necessary laboratory or EKG tests will be ordered. If you have any concerns about your current health or readiness for surgery, you should discuss them during this call.
To minimize your risk of exposure during your Perioperative period, we encourage you to wear a face covering and participate in social distancing. Screening questions and COVID19 testing will be an essential part of your preoperative pathway. Your provider will order a COVID19 swab test. Your surgery scheduler will schedule you a testing appointment about 4 days prior to surgery. Only if your test is positive, will your provider contact you. To ensure you stay healthy and optimize your recovery after surgery, we ask that you stay home after your COVID 19 test until you leave for your surgery. You will need to wear a mask without exhalation valve to the SF Surgery Center on the day of surgery.
The day prior to surgery a San Francisco Surgery Center nurse will perform a brief pre-operative telephone visit with you to confirm your arrival time, surgical procedure, and review any final concerns about your surgical visit.
Please plan ahead for transportation to and from your procedure. A responsible adult is required to take you home, and is strongly encouraged to remain with you for the next 24 hours to ensure your safety and comfort. If a responsible adult is not available to take you home, San Francisco Surgery Center will assist you during this pre-operative telephone call in setting up a scheduled medical transport.
Please arrive one hour prior to your scheduled surgery time. Upon arrival, you will be asked to sign registration and consent forms. Your KP co-payment, if any, will be collected during this time. In preparation for surgery, a nurse will take you back to your pre-operative suite and restroom, where you will change into a surgical gown. A secured locker is provided for your clothing. Here you will meet with your KP surgeon and anesthesiologist, and will have the opportunity to ask any last minute questions you may have.
We ask that you please leave all valuables at home as you will be asked to remove all jewelry and contact lenses prior to surgery. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that are easily removed for your convenience.
Our building has a valet parking garage on the ground floor, which your ride may park in. After your surgery and during recovery, we will contact your ride 30 minutes prior to your discharge from the facility. At discharge, a nurse will wheelchair you down to your ride at the front of the building upon their arrival. If you are being picked up by a responsible adult, the nurse will review discharge instructions at this time.
A follow up appointment with your KP surgeon will be scheduled through KP.
